Don't forget many of the services and suppliers you require will be able and only too happy to provide advice. My sister owns a shipping a removals company in the Canaries and as a long standing ex-pat herself (along with her two business partners) she is often able to take some of the mystery out of moving abroad as well as dealing with the removal and storage.
Great article and great website, especially for someone like me who is "thinking about it".

Rob--thats right there is always SO MUCH research to do, and some of it you just cant know until you've arrived. Expats today are fortunate to have these networks of bloggers and websites to help with research.

Sarah--In Japan I expect language is essential. I know that even finding your way around is difficult without knowing the language!! Wow, gutting fish--and squid!? New life skills for sure!

Great post. I'm an expat in Japan.

Under education, language is KEY.

Understanding food availability and preparation is also important. No oven. Had to learn to gut fish.. and squid ;)

Many Brits (I am one, so feel entitled to comment) also need to know about bringing pets, UK TV and certain UK food stuff availability before they move abroad.

Good article, anyone considering a move please do your research and this article provides a great starting point.
