I think this raises some very interesting points. Having now lived 10 yrs as an Expat I would not claim to be more intelligent but tolerant, flexible, creative - certainly. As to living longer - time will tell. It has been a great experience so far.

Chris--wouldn't it be a fantastic thing if everyone has a cross-cultural experience? The world might be a more tolerant place...

Megan--glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the link! Interesting!

Going to live in another country may not necessarily increase your 'intelligence', but consider this:

If all American Grade 11 students (for example) were required to partake in a 6-10 week international exchange program with a student of the same age from a random country and of random social class, and those international students returned to the USA for a 6-10 week's stay ... well, consider how that would change the world.

The American kids would get a taste of what it's like outside their comfort zone, and the international students would get to spend some time in the country they have only seen on film. What both kids would experience would completely rock their world.

20+ years ago I signed up for an exchange between our school in British Columbia to a school in rural Quebec. It was in Grade 11. It cost me $15 at the time. Completely and undeniably set me on a far more enlightening and interesting path.
