How did you become an expat, and why?

It was a long standing dream to live in the tropics. I found it was getting harder and harder to go through Canadian winter. So after a visit to Ambergris Caye Belize that put another piece of the puzzle in place and we knew this was where we were going to land.

Where else have you been an expat?

Just Belize.

Best piece of expat advice you’ve received?

Plan ahead – make sure you know what you need to ride out the waiting period while you settle into your new country.

Best piece of expat advice you’d give?

If this is something you know you need to do then plug your nose and jump you won’t regret it. Once you arrive get active in the community.

Favorite expat related web sites?

Message boards are very useful expat sites in terms of getting good information and meeting new people who have a common interest.

I am a full time blogger. In addition to doing tacogirl.com on a daily basis I also for a volunteer blog for a local school, Holy Cross

Would you recommend your current location to other expats? Does it rock or does it suck?

It is a great place to live if you are ready for this kind of life.

  1. Hi Tacogirl, my name is Sierra and I am a florida native. My husband and I want to move to belize. Any suggestions before we take the plung. How is the medical field? law enforcement? Do you suggest saving any amount of money to move with? Thank you ahead of time from one dream liver to another!

    Hi Sierra – best thing to do is plan a scouting trip then you can check into all areas you are considering first hand. Many jobs here are not high wages or would go to a Belizean first and often people opt for starting something up or buying an existing business that is for sale already. Hope that helps.
