Great Countries to Teach English

These are some popular countries if you are researching where to teach English abroad.

Visit Oxford Seminars for information about getting certified to teach English, and look at the individual Country Profiles.

Also visit Transitions Abroad for further details about job placement and general experience.

Korea

Salary is high for English teachers in South Korea, since the demand far exceeds the supply, and you will likely receive benefits. There are several job options, but the biggest markets are for younger children in private schools and business people. Many of the programs will pay to have you flown out and certified, help you find an apartment, and even compensate for some living expenses. Korea has a high standard of living and is very technologically advanced. There are many job openings in the cities of Seoul or Busan, but there are also many for the rural and coastal areas.

Japan

Japan, a country made up of 6,852 islands, also offers high-paying English jobs, and they will usually subsidize your airfare, apartment and some health insurance. The market is usually open for hiring year round, and there are various programs that range from teaching English to business executives in Tokyo to teaching children in rural areas. One popular and well-rated program sponsored through the government is the JET Program.

Czech Republic

czech-republic

The Czech Republic is a long-established buffer zone between Eastern and Western Europe. While many cities in Europe had been destroyed by WWII, Prague still stands with beautiful Gothic and Baroque architecture contrasted with bleak socialist structures. There are many openings in Prague, the capital, but there are also jobs in more localized cities like Brno and Plzen. It is best to look for jobs in the private language schools, but there is still a market at the high schools and universities. This is not the place to go to save up a lot of money, but the cost of living and food in this country is low. Make sure not to come looking for a job in the summer!

Mexico

Mexico is a big, diverse country, full of desert, beaches and volcanoes, and a rich cultural history influenced by ancient civilizations and Spanish colonialism. Most English teaching jobs in Mexico are in universities and language schools. You will make more money in urban areas, such as Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. Universities are more legitimate, as they tend to offer FM3 Visas, higher salary and good benefits. Once you move to Mexico, major benefit (in our eyes at least) of Mexican culture is the siesta, in which you’ll get to break up the day with a rest!
