You are probably right. I learn a language mainly through curiosity (my family prefer to refer to it as nosiness..) because when I live somewhere, I like to know what’s going on, both on a social and functional level. But language ir like all learning; we are either doing them because we enjoy the process and the feeling of purpose, achievement or skill, or we are doing it for some financial or career gain.
And let’s face it, most of us take things more seriously if we are paid for our efforts!
