Homicide rate for the last year I lived there was 136 per 100,000 in the department(province) I lived. Honduras was and still is, I believe the gateway for perhaps 75% of illicit drugs entering the US from the South. San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa both were running homicide rates of 100+ per 100,000 as well. Far and away the most dangerous place in the Western Hemisphere. Bogata and Medellin in Colombia were deadly back in the 70’s and 80′ but today nowhere’s near as deadly as Honduras.

“lol the only kidnapping involving foreign tourists in the last 5 or 6 years was an Unitedstasian tourist and it didn’t happened in Bogotá or the area around”

The Russian businessman who was forcibly taken to an ATM in Bogota during Aug 2011, forced to withdraw his cash, and then promptly was shot dead for his trouble wasn’t a kidnapping? It was a murder anyway.

Strange how you Bogotanos and ex-pats pretend that that murder didn’t happen btw. Very strange.

@American, Chicago has 10 million, not 2.5.

@JCC, Bogota had a higher murder rate than Baltimore, Detroit and Chicago during 2012.

The only city you listed that was higher was New Orleans, and that could be subject to Bogota not factoring in missing people who have been killed and buried clandestinely.

It’s unfortunate that a lobster never knows the boiling water until it is about to die. ANY place can be dangerous, to a more or less degree. NEVER
take it for granted that no one is watching you and your habits carefully.
When I was dumped off at the Greyhound bus station in New Orleans in the 1980s, and had to walk to the French Quarter for my room, I had to pass
extremely questionable neighborhoods. I pretended I had tourette’s syndrome
and even drooled a little. No one bothered me at all as I passed. Lucky?
Maybe.

It would be a serious mistake to generalize about the safety of any of the cities in this article based on commemter’s experiences.

However some of the places you have named as being the most dangerous I would have to disagree with. Yes the townships are to be avoided unless you are in an organised group during daylight hours but Salt River and Observatory?? Really?? I have spent time in both these areas and have experienced no problems whatsoever. Observatory is a well known spot for students on a night out and Salt River is home to the Old Biscuit Mill, a very touristic market held on Saturday mornings which myself and hundreds if not thousands of others attend every week with no issues at all. Be sensible, don’t go out alone to places you are unfamiliar with. Don’t carry all your valuables with you but it’s important Cape Town is not continually given an all in all bad reputation. Fear breads fear and the more articles that say Cape Town is dangerous the more people will avoid it and this will simply exacerbate the problems that already exist. Increased tourism will not solve all of Cape Towns issues but it will at least provide a livelihood to some and hopefully keep the international pressure on the government to improve the situation.

I think it’s safe to say that you just don’t have to ask for it, don’t go to Lapa during the day, at night it’s safer, everyone’s partying over there so there’s a lot of people on the streets.

Beaches at night depend on which one. The ones close to a favela probably aren’t the safest ones to sip on that night’s last caipirinha. I went to the beach at night quite a lot of times, just know which one to go to – ask locals!

Favelas tend to be a lot safer these years, still I wouldn’t try going in without a proper guide.
