Why Go Expat?

Becoming an expat isn’t an easy decision. For most, it involves leaving friends and family members behind, moving to a new location with few existing friends, scary cultural transitions, often it means leaving a job behind, and language barriers are nothing short of daunting. Although the list of challenges expatriates face when relocating can seem more like a giant list of reasons why not to travel, they also become the same reasons people are happy they took the plunge.

Let’s take a closer look.

Leaving friends and family members behind is a foundational fact behind becoming and expat. It does imply, though, that you’re traveling to new and exotic locations where new friends surely await. The harsh reality behind leaving can be scary, but almost every single expat living abroad will tell you it was one of the best decisions of their life. Plus, with so many ways to keep in touch it will hardly seem like you’re that far away. Family members and friends also enjoy the reason to travel – to come visit you!

Cultural transitions are both a challenge and huge reward to living abroad. Although it might seem daunting at first, different cultures have a lot of perspective to offer. Most expats find a love for their new cultural environment and many keep with traditions and customs they picked up while traveling for years after the fact.

Sure you might leave a job behind, but what about the job that has yet to come? A lot of expats start their own businesses or change career paths for the better after making a decision to live abroad. Go find out what’s out there for you!

Learning a new language can be difficult but it can also be one of the most rewarding skills an expatriate picks up. Languages are difficult to learn in the classroom. Almost anyone who has lived abroad will tell you the language didn’t come after just a few months, but instead took possibly years to manage. Knowing a foreign language has innumerable advantages. So dive in head first and move to a foreign speaking country. Expand your horizons by learning!

The best part about becoming an expatriate is all the changes it imparts on your life. A million new learning experiences are there to be had when you decide to live in a different country. New people to meet, new places to see and new perspectives to be gained. Ask any expat why they did it and you’re likely to be stuck in a longer conversation than you expected.

Why do it?– Why not?
