I currently live in Taiwan. A very small city in Miaoli City of Miaoli County. Living per day is very cheap. Rent is about 200$ US, but I have a good size apartment. Nothing special with furniture, but my living conditions are good. I have two stove tops which are not guaranteed in the cities; yet I have here in the small city in the mountains. Taiwan is beautiful but in this country I have seen a compilation of 1st world, 2nd world and 3rd world living environments. I have lived in Sweden, traveled all of Europe, lived in Ecuador and been to many other countries. This island has a lot to offer in the cities on the West Coast (Taichung City, Hsinchu, Taoyan, Taipei, Kaoshung, Tainan). Taichung City is my favorite; however I have not spent much time in Taipei. Eight million people in one place sounds intriguing, but as a teacher the cost of living is quite high. If I go to Taipei, I am also afraid that I will not return to this very small city in Taiwan. My salary goes much further, but not having any foreigners is very frustrating. I see more foreigners in one day in Taichung or Hsinchu than I see in 2 months in Miaoli. Thank you again for this article; I have considered moving to teach English elsewhere after this year; Chiang Mai, Thailand had already caught my interest as a place to work or vacation. Plus my mother taught in Bangkok–I would love to read an article about the “least humid” asian cities with a high population. Another article that would be interesting to me: Modern conveniences of big cities in Asia. Top 5 or Top 10 .. I’m guessing Taipei, Tokyo, Shanghai, amongst others would be in the list. I look forward to reading more. Is Saudi Arabia really safe to teach?
