During the Cold War, it was a part of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a non-aligned socialist state completely independent of the Soviet Union. Yugoslavia’s communism was much milder and religious freedoms, while by no means fully recognized, were far better respected than in the USSR.
