Countries with the Longest Coastlines
If you are someone who cannot live without the ocean, sea or just water in general, these are the best countries to be!
10. China
Coastlines: 9,010 miles
China’s coast stretches along the Pacific Ocean and into several seas. Though there are many good harbors, most of Chinese civilization has taken place inland. There are about 5,000 Chinese islands off its coastline.
9. New Zealand
Coastlines: 9,404 miles
New Zealand’s coastline throughout the Pacific contains countless ports and harbors, such as Bluff and Wellington Harbor. The Northland coastline is very irregular, and has a 205 mile long peninsula that extends into northwest Auckland.
8. USA
Coastlines: 12,380 miles
The United States coastline stretches from the Atlantic from the Pacific, and through the Gulf of Mexico, though the vast majority of the country is landlocked in the middle.
7. Norway
Coastlines: 13,624 miles
Norway has a deeply indented coastline that consists of many fjords. The largest fjord is named Songafjorden, which extends inland for 127 miles. Most harbors and important cities of Norway are situated on fjords. Its coast is situated on the Barents Sea, the Arctic Ocean and the North Sea.
6. Australia
Coastlines: 16,0007 miles
The Australian coastline is very diverse, and its environments range from mangroves, estuaries, rocky shores, sandy shores, cliffs, islands, towns, cities, and rainforest. It also features the Great Barrier Reef, the largest reef on earth! It is on the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and Tasmania borders the Arctic Ocean.
5. Japan
Coastlines: 18,486 miles
Japan has thousands of islands, which explains its immense coastlines. The Pacific coastline north of Tokyo, the coast of Hokkaido, and the Sea of Japan coast are very unindented and do not hold many natural harbors. Nowhere in Japan is more than 150 km away from the sea.
4. Philippines
Coastlines: 22,529 miles
The Philippines has very many islands. Its coastline has many bays, gulfs and inlets. Manila Bay is the most important harbor.
3. Russia
Coastlines: 23,296
Russia is the biggest country in the world, and its coastline accounts for one of the biggest, even though the bulk of the country is landlocked. Its coast touches the Gulf of Finland, the Barents Sea, the Kara Sea, the Laptev Sea, the East Siberian Sea, the Arctic Sea, the Black Sea and more.
2. Indonesia
Coastlines: 33,999
Indonesia is an assortment of scattered islands. The Indonesia Sea contains the smaller seas within the Indonesia realm: the Java Sea, the Banda Sea, the Bali Sea, the Flores Sea and the Makassar Strait.
1. Canada
Coastlines: 151, 485
Canada is the second biggest country in the world, but has the longest coastline. Like America, it touches the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and also the Great Lakes, and many rivers.
Where is Britain? The coastline of that island is just over 11,000 miles long. So it should be 9th on your list.
LOL, I’m getting mixed up with miles and km.
But you did miss out Greenland, which has the third longest coast in the world.
Correction: Tasmania does not border the Artic by any stretch of the imagination, it is tens of thousands of kilometers away. That is a blunder and puts the ‘truism’ of this whole article in doubt! According to reliable and official Australian sources, Australia is bounded by 3 oceans, the Pacific to the east, Indian ocean to the west and north and the Southern Ocean to the south, therefore Tasmania(being Australia’s southernmost state) is bounded by the Southern Ocean. Forget what the Americans say that Australia is only bounded by 2 oceans. It is a lie, it is called Americanization, they try to manipulate everything and make others believe them. Can you believe that they consider the Northwest passage that passes through countless Canadian islands as ‘international waters’ and claim that the Missippi is the longest river in the US while the Misouri is much longer-even on the map? That is why they also overbloat their GDP. I can assure you that China has a larger GDP that the US!
