Spinster, it seems that most native Emaratis are quite happy in Dubai, and many live normal-looking suburban lives with SUVs and 2-car garages. I also spent time in Al Ain, which is a fairly large city near the Yemen border, and it’s VERY different, with almost no one speaking English. So it seems that locals can pick the style they prefer, and most seem to be well-off enough to do it. -Tom
